It's Time for Some Appreciation

PHE has been a very busy place over the last month.  There has been an urgent buzz in the air as teachers and students prepared for the statewide assessments.  Now that testing is done, I feel a wave of gratitude wash over me.  I am so grateful that we have such a hard-working group of dedicated teachers and staff here to support our students.  They have found a variety of ways to keep students excited about learning as we push towards the end of the year.

Autism Awareness "Puzzle Tree"
Focus on Caring
The month of April was Autism Awareness month.  PHE joined in on the celebration by hosting an Autism Spirit Week.  Our goal was to celebrate how we are all connected and how we are alike, while also valuing the uniqueness and diversity of our students.  Students participated in activities such as creating a class puzzle tree, and tying a blue ribbon in the shape of a puzzle on our school fence.

Our Character Assemblies have also focused on helping students learn about autism and caring for each other.  I have seen many examples of students demonstrating caring and advocating for each other on the playground and in the classrooms.

Learning in Action
Despite the stress of testing, the learning never stops at PHE.  Students across all grade levels engaged in project-based learning from designing solar ovens, examining crayfish, to dissecting squid our students have appreciated opportunities to explore science!

PHE has also been able to extend student learning by offering after school intervention and enrichment opportunities during this last trimester.  Our plan is to continue this program and offer at least two sessions so that even more students can take advantage of this opportunity!

Our STEAM lab in room 22 is finally ready for its grand opening!  Stop by and check it out during Open House.  Thank you, PHEEF, for supporting student innovation!

Our Amazing Music Program
Music is definitely in the air.  Both our instrumental and vocal music programs have had some stellar performances over the last month. First, Ms. Blind led our third graders through an incredible recorder assembly performance. Then, under the direction of Mr. Yearsley, five of our students were selected to perform as part of the first MDUSD Elementary Honor Band! Our musical month has culminated with last week's band/orchestra Spring Concert and the MARE Sing-a-long.  The performances were truly amazing!
