Showing our Character

"For it is in giving that we receive." - Francis of Assisi

                                                      Adventures in Learning
Trimester 2 has officially begun!  Our school has been abuzz with many activities over the past month. One of our areas of focus has been Reader's Workshop.  Students have been engaging in lessons that are designed to improve their reading skills while simultaneously building their love of reading.  I have thoroughly enjoyed popping into classrooms and witnessing the learning in action.  In addition to classroom lessons, our students have also extended their learning beyond the boundaries of our school.  Our 5th graders went to Camp Loma Mar for outdoor science education during the last week of November.  I have heard many a story that evidenced the incredible learning experience that our Dinos enjoyed.  Another extraordinary experience brought to PHE students was that they were able to join classrooms across our country in watching the live broadcast of NASA's Insight Mars landing.  I'm very grateful that our students were able to participate in this historic event!  Here's a short clip of a 3rd grade class watching the landing!

PBIS Updates
PHE is still making great strides in our implementation of Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS).  Did you know our Buddy Bench video recently won 3rd place at the statewide 2018 California PBIS Video Contest (click here to view)?  Although the video was filmed during a previous year, our Buddy Benches have been upgraded and are still in use! Also part of our PBIS program are our Character Assemblies.  Our latest assemblies have been in Allyship and Perseverance.  The goal is to help provide our Dinos young and old with the tools to regulate their emotions and resolve conflicts peacefully.  A recurring theme is to help students distinguish between the difference between "conflicts" and "bullying" and when they should seek out an adult for help.  Please view the following short video which succinctly outlines the differences between conflict and bullying.  Conflict vs Bullying

Opportunities to Give
As always, I want to give my heart-felt thanks to our parent community for their unwavering support.  Throughout this past month, we have been actively engaged in a wave of giving.  PTA has been sponsoring a Food Drive from 11/26 - 12/13 to provide support to our very own PHE families who are in need.  We have also been collecting monetary donations for the Butte County Schools Campfire Relief Fund to support the students who suffered the devastating effects of the Camp Fire.  It has been an awe-inspiring experience for me to watch our Dinos come into the office and make donations.  It is clear that students are taking the support effort to heart as I watch them literally emptying their piggy banks (and ziplock baggies) so that they can make a personal donation.  I'm so proud of our Dinos showing their character!

Since Trimester 1 has come to and end, we will be hosting our first Awards Assembly of the year later this week.  Be on the lookout for invitations to join us for this assembly recognizing the accomplishments of our students.  Remember not all students will receive an award for the first trimester, but there will be two more opportunities later in the year.

Parent Teacher Conferences 12/10 - 12/21
